THE HOTEL GYM WORKOUT (pdf)
DownloadI was your run-of-the-mill, blend-into-the-background High School geek, lacking all confidence and self-esteem. Skipping college, I became an anti-social punk in Washington D.C., surviving an existence of violence, drugs and alcohol. I was on a path with only two outcomes: jail or death. I chose a third option, run away. On blind faith alone I drove across the country with no job or place to live waiting for me in San Francisco. The city the furthest away from my past and problems. So I thought.
After a devastating break up my life spiraled downward and I collapsed into a shell, devoid of confidence again. I was consumed by depression, which brought forth the darkest thoughts imaginable. Thoughts that almost convinced me that maybe this world would be better off without me in it. My failure to go through with the act is now my greatest victory.
After waking up on my kitchen floor, my face bleeding from the fall I took after blacking out drunk for the 4th time that week I knew I was back on the path I ran away from. I looked at my broken and bloody face in the mirror and said, "ENOUGH!" But this time I didn't run from my problems. I decided to change.
As I roamed the streets of the Tenderloin smoking my last cigarette I found myself outside a martial arts studio. This was my MOMENT OF CHANGE. I dedicated all my energy, the good and the bad, towards studying martial arts. This led to strength, flexibility, balance, mobility and body building training.
After the switch was thrown I found myself stepping from the shadows and into the breaking dawn of new light. I put myself through college, found work as a Creative Director in Advertising, which led to the starring roll on the hit Syfy Channel show, Ghost Mine. Once that venture had finished I made another choice. I decided to dedicate myself to guiding others out from depression, abuse, addition, social-anxiety issues, and the darkness that I knew all too well when I was younger.
Life continues to challenge my courage and will, but as long as we stay ahead of our past, the less likely it will sneak up behind you and bite you in the ass. That's why I live by the words, DON'T BE FOOD!
